Just brought home a new crystal? Here is everything you need to know about cleansing and charging your stones to make them truly yours.
Just Brought Home a New Crystal? How to Cleanse and Charge It (Without Ruining It)
You found the one. It called to you. It was sitting there looking expensive and mysterious. And now it’s in your house.
If you’re wondering what to do next, here’s the witchy-but-practical guide to cleansing and charging your crystals so they feel like yours.
First: What “Cleansing” and “Charging” Actually Mean
· Cleansing clears away lingering energy from handling, travel, storage, and other people’s hands.
· Charging is how you set the crystal’s purpose. Think: “this is what we’re doing together.”
You can do one without the other, but for a new crystal, doing both is the cleanest start.
Before You Do Anything: Don’t Destroy Your Crystal
A lot of crystals are fine with a quick rinse. The issue is that some stones are soft, porous, or have natural cracks and inclusions, and water can dull them, stain them, or weaken them over time.
Rule of thumb: if you don’t know what your stone can handle, choose a no-risk cleansing method (smoke, sound, or moonlight). It’s still effective, and it keeps your crystal safe.
Water: quick rinse vs soaking
If you use water, keep it brief.
· Avoid soaking for long periods.
· Pat dry gently.
· If your crystal is set in jewellery or has metal parts, skip water.
Sunlight: use with care
Sunlight can fade certain stones over time. If you want to use sunlight, keep it short and indirect.
Step 1: Cleanse Your Crystal (Pick One Method)
You don’t need to do all of these. Pick the one that fits your space and your comfort level.
1) Smoke cleansing
Best for: a classic ritual feel, quick resets.
How:
· Light incense or a smoke bundle.
· Pass the crystal through the smoke for 10-30 seconds.
· Set the intention: “Clear what isn’t mine.”
2) Sound cleansing
Best for: smoke-free homes, sensitive spaces.
How:
· Use a bell, singing bowl, chime, or even a loud clap.
· Ring sound around the crystal for 30-60 seconds.
· Visualise the sound shaking loose any stagnant energy.
3) Salt cleansing (no direct contact)
Best for: heavy energy, protection work.
How:
· Put a layer of salt in a bowl.
· Place the crystal in a smaller dish on top of the salt (so it doesn’t touch).
· Leave for a few hours or overnight.
4) Moonlight cleansing
Best for: gentle, steady cleansing.
How:
· Place the crystal on a windowsill overnight.
· Works especially well around the full moon, but any moonlight will do.
5) Cleansing spray
Best for: fast, low-mess, everyday upkeep.
How:
· Mist around the crystal lightly.
· Wipe gently if needed.
Step 2: Claim It (This Is the Part People Skip)
Cleansing clears the slate. Claiming is where you make it yours.
Try this:
1. Hold the crystal in both hands.
2. Take three slow breaths.
3. Say (out loud if you can):
o “You are mine now.”
o “You are cleared.”
o “You are here for [purpose].”
Keep the purpose simple. One crystal, one job.
Step 3: Charge It (Choose a Style)
Charging is less about “powering up” and more about alignment.
Option A: Charge with the moon
Best for: intuition, protection, emotional work.
How:
· Place it under moonlight overnight.
· Name what you want it to support.
Option B: Charge with candlelight
Best for: intention-setting, spell work, focus.
How:
· Light a candle.
· Hold the crystal near (not in) the flame’s warmth.
· Speak your intention clearly.
Option C: Charge with breath and focus
Best for: quick charging, travel, daily use.
How:
· Hold the crystal.
· Breathe slowly and visualise it filling with light.
· End with a clear statement: “So it is.”
Option D: Charge on your altar
Best for: long-term work.
How:
· Place it on your altar for a full lunar cycle, or at least overnight.
· Let it absorb the energy of your practice.
How Often Should You Cleanse and Charge?
There’s no crystal police. Use common sense.
Cleanse your crystals:
· When they’re new
· After intense emotional days
· After spell work
· If they feel off
· If lots of people handled them
Charge your crystals:
· When you set a new intention
· When you’re starting a new project
· When you want to strengthen the work you’re doing
A Few Practical Tips (So This Stays a Practice)
· Store with intention: keep crystals for different purposes separate.
· Don’t overcomplicate it: a 60-second cleanse is still a cleanse.
· Be consistent: the relationship matters more than the method.
Quick Disclaimer
Crystals are spiritual tools. They’re not a substitute for medical, legal, or financial advice. Use fire safety, ventilate if using smoke, and treat delicate stones gently.
